This is a vertically mounted electrochemical cell for operando goniometric X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) during the electrochemical experiment. The cell can be used as a two-compartment H-cell with the working electrode and the counter electrode separated by a membrane, or it can be used without a membrane as a single-compartment cell. The working electrode is mounted on a height adjustable centre post and can accept samples up to 25 mm x 25 mm and up to 4 mm thick. By using interchangeable adapters, the cell can work with different sample sizes (one adapter included). Electrical contact to the working electrode is made via a “wet” tantalum foil which, with the Kapton foil window, determines the electrolyte thickness, standard is 300 µm. This allows for lower energy X-Ray sources to be used to perform measurements with a minimum 2θ of 5°. The cell can be used in both flow and stagnant mode, in each chamber independently.

The cell consists of a multipart PEEK body with a separable compartment for the counter electrode for either single or double compartment operation depending on whether or not a membrane is installed. Both compartments are fitted with tubing for independent electrolyte filling and recirculation. The working electrode is placed on a pedestal which is inserted into the bottom of the cell, and can be translated along the vertical axis using a set screw so that the active surface of the working electrode is placed in contact with the tantalum foil, which together with the Kapton film window is secured to the cell body via a polished stainless steel flange and screws. It accepts our standard 6 mm reference electrodes, as well as 6 mm diameter rod or helix counter electrodes. It is available in two variants, for aqueous or organic electrolytes, with FKM/EPDM or FFKM O-Rings, respectively. When properly assembled and maintained, the cell is gas- and liquid-tight.

Application note
This XRD EC H-cell is optimised for demanding operando electrochemical and XRD experiments. The minimum electrolyte thickness and geometry allow for real-time measurements of ion intercalation in electrochemically active materials or monitor the progress of electrochemical processing (deposition etc.) using either low or high energy X-ray sources with a minimum 2θ value of 5°. It is compatible with most goniometric XRD instruments and can be customised on request. For troubleshooting instruction see the redox.me blog post
