DeOx

DeOx: A new, efficient and sustainable electrocatalyst to remove dissolved oxygen in water

The DeOx project focuses on the design, development and test of a disruptive new solution for removing dissolved oxygen in water. Removing dissolved oxygen in water is extremely important for laboratories performing empirical research in chemistry, in order to produce robust results. Furthermore, it is relevant also for those industries (e.g., food, beverage, pharmaceutics, metalworking) using a massive amount of fresh water and requiring high quality standards. The deoxygenation of water avoids oxidation and alteration of the final products. Our DeOx solution is highly innovative and uses a new n-type organic polymer for oxygen reduction of water. This will be part of an electrolyser for advanced electrochemical flow oxygen removal. Preliminary analysis provided astonishing performance results, superior to competitors. The DeOx solution brings many advantages also for sustainability, since it avoids using other chemical, gasseous or mechanical deoxygenation methods. These are inefficient and costly, use more fresh water and energy, liberate CO2 or cause potential harm for human beings or the environment. The new DeOx solution will substantially contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 “Clean water and sanitation”, 7 “Affordable and clean energy”, 8 “Decent work and economic growth” and 9 “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”.
