MM PEC 15 mL double-sided - Magnetic Mount Photo-electrochemical Cell
This is a horizontally mounted, single compartment photo-electrochemical cell used to simultaneously investigate thin film photo-anodes and cathodes. This cell allows several approaches to perform measurements in 2- or 3-electrode setups. It is designed to investigate performance of a thin film photo-anode (e.g. nanocrystalline material or conducting polymer) deposited on a rigid or flexible transparent substrate (typically fused quartz glass). The cathode (counter electrode) is either mounted in a top casing or attached on the other side of the cell as a thin film deposited on rigid or flexible substrate. The reference electrode is mounted in a top casing. The cell elements are made of PEEK. It well fits aqueous (FKM/EPDM O-Rings) and organic solvent (FFKM O-Rings) electrolyte requirements. The construction is gas-tight having gas inlet and outlet, which can be used to bubble the solution and evacuate gases from the chamber.
Another version of this cell equipped with classical screw mount instead of magnets is available here.
Application note
The thin films of interest deposited on a transparent glass or plastic foil (counter electrode may be deposited on an opaque substrate) are installed in the magnetic mounts, facing the cell chamber. In 2-electrode setup, both sockets in the top chasing may be plugged and the electrochemistry is going on between thin films of working and counter electrodes. The counter electrode may also be placed in the socket close to the working electrode. When 3-electrode setup is required, the reference electrode is placed close to the measured sample to limit the effect of electrolyte resistance, while the counter electrode occupies the remaining socket or is mounted in the opposite sample holder. Various auxiliary electrodes are suitable for this cell including metal wire, gauze and foil electrodes as well as non-metal electrodes and thin films. Typical applications include: basic photochemistry, photolytic water splitting, photoinduced charge separation and photocorrosion. For troubleshooting instruction see the redox.me blog post.
