This is a single compartment bulk electrolysis cell (known also as potentiostatic coulometry cell or controlled potential coulometry cell). In this innovative cell concept, the cell vessel made of Glassy Carbon contains studied liquid and acts as a working electrode at the same time. The electrical connection to this electrode is made by 0.75 mm thick Copper ring pressed to the Glassy Carbon chamber by the lid. The counter electrode (typically Platinum wire or Platinum gauze electrode) and reference electrode (typically Ag/AgCl for aqueous electrolytes or Ag/Ag+ for organic media) are installed in the cell lid. Both counter and reference electrodes are not included in the cell and should be added to the quotation separately. Glassy Carbon working electrode provides a large flat surface area which is easy to clean (chemically and mechanically). This unique electrode arrangement and possibility to use magnetic stirring ensure very efficient mass transport conditions and multiple use. The cell is insulated from the bottom by PTFE cup and can be placed on a metallic surface such as stirring plate or hot plate. The cell elements are constructed with materials that are inert to the sample (PEEK and PTFE). It well fits aqueous (FKM/EPDM O-Rings) and organic solvent (FFKM O-Rings) electrolyte requirements. The construction is liquid- and gas-tight.

Application note
Usually electrolysis is carried out under potentiostatic conditions by stepping the potential from a value where no faradaic current is observed to one where the reaction is mass transport-controlled. Typical applications of bulk electrolysis include complete oxidation or reduction of species, the complete synthesis of a product through electrochemical processes (small-scale preparative electrosynthesis and electroseparation), partial oxidation or reduction of a compound to change the ratio of oxidized and reduced species and studying the complexity of the reaction mechanism (e.g. coupled reactions).
