This is a horizontally mounted, three-compartment photo-electrochemical flow H-cell designed for the investigation of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) under controlled gas, electrolyte flow and illumination conditions. The cell consists of two liquid-filled electrochemical chambers and an additional gas chamber. The investigated GDE is mounted between the gas chamber and the central electrolyte chamber. This configuration provides direct contact between the gas phase and the gas-facing side of the GDE, while its catalyst layer remains in contact with the electrolyte.
The liquid chambers may be separated by an ion-exchange membrane, preventing reaction products generated at the working and counter electrodes from affecting the opposite electrode compartment.
Each liquid chamber is equipped with electrolyte inlet and outlet ports, allowing continuous electrolyte circulation, efficient removal of reaction products and connection to external electrolyte reservoirs.
The GDE, aqueous or organic reference electrode, and counter electrode are not included with the cell and must be added to the quotation separately if required.

Application note
The cell has been designed for electrochemical and photo-electrochemical investigation of gas diffusion electrodes, including electrodes used for gas-phase reactant conversion. The reference electrode is positioned in the central electrolyte chamber, close to the electrolyte-facing surface of the GDE. The GDE is additionally sealed with a dedicated O-ring that prevents radial leakage between the gas and electrolyte compartments. This sealing design ensures a well-defined active area, minimizes bypass flow, and provides reliable gas-tight operation during electrochemical and photo-electrochemical experiments. This configuration enables reliable measurement and control of the potential at the investigated electrode while minimising the uncompensated resistance between the reference electrode and the GDE surface. The gas chamber allows a controlled gas stream to be supplied directly to the rear side of the GDE. Depending on the experiment, the chamber may be connected to a gas supply system, mass flow controller, humidifier or gas-analysis equipment. The investigated GDE can be illuminated through an optical window using a solar simulator when a photoactive gas diffusion electrode is used. The cell also enables illumination of the photoactive counter electrode from the opposite side. Consequently, two independent light sources may be applied when both the GDE and the counter electrode are photoactive. The counter-electrode chamber supports several electrode configurations. A photoactive counter electrode deposited on a transparent substrate may be used for dual-illumination experiments. Alternatively, a metal or carbon plate, or a conventional counter electrode such as a platinum wire, may be installed. The cell is suitable for both stationary and flow-through operation. External electrolyte reservoirs and peristaltic pumps may be used for electrolyte circulation. The gas outlet may be connected to analytical equipment such as a gas chromatograph or mass spectrometer for quantitative analysis of gaseous reactants and products.
