Activated carbon is used for the preparation of electrostatic double-layer capacitors. Formulated as an ink, the activated carbon can be coated on a current collector such as aluminum, copper, or graphite, dried, and prepared as electrodes for capacitors. An electrochemical capacitor has two electrodes, separated by a separator or a membrane that is soaked in an ionically conductive electrolyte. This activated carbon ink is suitable for particularly organic electrolytes, but good results can be obtained for other electrolytes such as water-based salt solutions.

Application note
Prior to coating the substrate surface should preferably be coated with a thin graphite coating for better adherence and reduced contact resistance between the electrode material and the current collector. Before use, the ink may be mixed using a homogenizer mixer and the optimal coating thickness is 200 to 300 µm. After coating the wet film should be dried at 60° - 90°C for 1h. Forced drying can reduce drying time significantly. It´s recommended to press electrodes after drying. Suitable application method: slot die coating, doctor blade coating, or a similar method.
