The High-Pressure Basic Sample Holder is a high-pressure variant of the popular Basic Sample Holder. In this design, a metal wire serves as the electrical conductor between the electrode material, either free-standing or deposited on a substrate, and the external circuit.
The holder is composed of PEEK body components that are in direct contact with the electrolyte, combined with a stainless steel (316L) fitting that provides mechanical strength where required. The current-collecting wire can be selected by the customer and is available in pure tantalum, stainless steel 316L, titanium, copper, or nickel. Other contact materials are available upon request. We specifically recommend tantalum wire as the electrical contact, as it is inert to nearly all organic and inorganic compounds. Tantalum exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to that of glass as both materials are unsuitable for use in hydrofluoric acid and in strong, hot alkaline environments. For such applications, we recommend selecting one of the alternative wire materials. The metal contact can be fully immersed in the electrolyte. The screws used to immobilize the sample and the sample mount are made of PEEK.
The holder is compatible with most inorganic and organic plates, free-standing membranes, and thin films deposited on both flexible and rigid substrates. The maximum allowable sample thickness is 4 mm.

Application note
The High-Pressure Basic Sample Holder is designed for electrochemical experiments requiring elevated pressures while maintaining reliable electrical contact and chemical compatibility with a wide range of electrolytes. It is particularly suited for fundamental research, materials screening, and durability testing under realistic operating conditions. Typical applications include high-pressure electrochemistry, catalyst and electrode material testing, membrane and coating evaluation, and studies of electrochemical reactions in pressurized aqueous or non-aqueous electrolytes.
Generally, the electrode is fabricated by fixing the electrochemical active sample into the holder using a screw. Such electrode is immersed in the ion-conducting solution as a working electrode or counter electrode. An electric current is passed between the working electrode and the counter electrode for a certain amount of time. Metal wire contact is permanently installed in the PEEK body. The holder is designed to be used multiple times. Before use, the holder should be cleaned, especially in the area of the metal wire. This is mainly to remove residues from previous samples, as they may hinder the establishment of good electrical contact.
The holder was designed for installation in Swagelok fittings suitable for 6 mm diameters. However, other fittings can also be used when installing the holder in a high-pressure cell. In all cases, we recommend using PTFE ferrules.
